Frozen rivers and first Ironmans: June on the trails

Winter hasn’t slowed the Vikings down. June brought trail runs, coastal challenges and a big tick on the bucket list in Cairns.

Tuggeranong Trot

The latest round of the Sri Chinmoy Canberra Trail Series took Vikings around Kambah Pool and Pine Island on 22 June, with 8 km and 20 km options. It was a balmy 0°C at the start, cold enough that you could see the frozen river below as you ran over the bridge. In true Sri Chinmoy style there were great aid stations on course and a BBQ at the finish to warm everyone up. The final race of the series, the Gungahlin Gallop, is on 20 July.

Wharf to Wharf and Light to Light

Graeme, Narelle and Bron took on the Wharf2Wharf 28 km Challenge, and Bron backed up the next day for the WinterSun Light to Light Trail Run. What legends!

Ironman Cairns

Matty completed his first Ironman, while Jono and Brian added another IRONMAN 70.3 each to their long list of finishes.

Kowen Winter Trail Runs

A number of Vikings braved the cold out at Kowen Forest for the 12 km, half and full marathon distances. Well done to all!

Thanks also to Corey for running specialised swim technique sessions over winter. They’re already lifting the standard of swimming across the club ahead of the new season.
